AFTER THE ACADEMICS Student Club Overview 2022-2023Welcome to the 2022–2023 school year! As you begin this new year at New Trier, we hope you will take some time to consider the many extracurricular opportunities available to you. This booklet contains descriptions of the more than 100 clubs, open to students of any interest or ability level. There truly is something for everyone! Once you have picked out clubs that interest you, you can find out about meeting times and locations on the New Trier website, in adviser room, in the Daily Bulletin, or by contacting any of the faculty members listed below. Get involved, make new friends, and explore all that New Trier has to offer. Participants in New Trier club leadership positions and Performing Arts opportunities are subject to the Extracurricular Code, which applies to students who participate in voluntary, school-sponsored activities that are not part of an academic class. The Extracurricular Code includes expectations for student behavior and consequences for any violations. The code is included in the Student Guidebook distributed to all families at the beginning of the school year. Instagram: @NTHSactivities • Twitter: @NTHSactivities 1 Amnesty International Amnesty International at New Trier joins a worldwide network of almost two million members advocating for victims of human rights abuses and torture. Our work has included fundraising efforts and education campaigns focused on global refugees, gun control, reproductive rights, and human rights issues for LGBTQ people around the world. Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) GSA is a social and activist group committed to creating a safe social space for LGBTQ+ students and their allies as well as working to end anti-LGBTQ+ bias at New Trier and in society at large. Open to ALL students, our members work in a socially accepting atmosphere to talk about issues affecting gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth, raise awareness, and strategize ways to make schools safer for all. ACTIVISM/ADVOCACY CLUBS Girl Up Girl Up is a United Nations Foundation that supports adolescent girls’ education, health, and safety in the developing world through UN programs. At New Trier, members focus on raising funds and awareness through speakers, art, video clips, a variety of sales, and an annual spring tea event. UNICEF UNICEF is a not-for-profit humanitarian organization that supports the holistic well-being of children in over 150 developing countries. The New Trier club partners with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to educate, advocate, and fundraise. Girl Up Amnesty InternationalClub offerings may change throughout the year. Instagram: @NTHSactivities • Twitter: @NTHSactivities 2 ACES Academic Challenge ACES is a test-based competition that includes biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics and physics. The tests are multiple choice, increasing in level of difficulty in a progression from regional, to sectional, to state competitions. Chess Chess Club is a competitive, interscholastic team that participates in several matches each year, including the Illinois State High School Tournament. Players at many different levels have participated through the years, from beginners to titled Masters. DECA DECA prepares emerging high school leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Members take excursions, engage with guest speakers, participate in service activities, and compete at local and national competitions. Activities vary as DECA student leaders develop creative ways to explore the business world. COMPETITIVE CLUBS Esports New Trier Esports is a group of students organized around playing competitive video games. The club forms national teams, as well as competes in the IHSA. The games playing may vary, contact a coach for details. Math Team Math Team focuses on learning problem-solving techniques used in competition. The team participates in several contests at the local and state levels. Robotics This is a VERY hands-on club where students design, build, test, and program remote-controlled robots to compete in land, air and underwater competitions. We also have a group that focuses on developing prosthetics for those in need, called New Trier e-Nable. Students can be a part of any group they choose. No experience necessary - all are welcome! Instagram: @NTHSactivities • Twitter: @NTHSactivities 3 COMPETITIVE CLUBS Scholastic Bowl Scholastic Bowl is a team competition that follows a format similar to Jeopardy! Members match wits with other teams from across the state and country on a variety of subjects including: math, science, social studies, literature, music, art, and pop culture. Science Olympiad (JV & Varsity) Science Olympiad teams compete in 23 challenging events at invitational, regional, state, and national competitions across the country. Some events require knowledge of science facts and others focus on concept and process skills, technology, and building. Science Olympiad provides a rigorous and collaborative community for those who love science. Learn more at https://forms.gle/aA3Vcrh73gmMuMyR9 Speech and Debate This is a group for those students who are passionate about specific issues or who can think quickly “on the fly.” Members of the team have the opportunity to develop their skills and participate in local and national interscholastic competitions, performing in interpretive, public address, and limited preparation events. Learn about historical and contemporary aspects of the African American experience. We participate in Roots of New Trier, fundraising, field trips to museums, plays, etc. All are welcome! Chinese Culture This club promotes a greater understanding of everything Chinese. Members participate in International Day, enjoy food from various ethnic restaurants, and sponsor a Chinese New Year celebration. All are welcome! Club Israel Anyone interested in modern-day Israel and Israeli culture is welcome. Members participate in Roots of New Trier and Springfest, hold fundraisers, invite guest speakers, go on excursions, and cook Israeli food. All New Trier students are welcome! French Culture We are a club for anyone who loves French culture. Everyone is welcome and we speak English at our weekly meetings. We celebrate French culture through fun activities like playing bocce ball, cooking French food, playing French board games, and going to a French restaurant! Come join us! German Culture Whether you are interested in the culture and history of German speaking countries, or you know nothing about these but think they could be interesting, join us! We play games, watch movies, cook typical foods and learn fun facts about Germany, Austria and Switzerland. No need to speak German! All are welcome! Global Exchange Global Exchange is the support organization and peer resource for exchange students attending New Trier. We plan holiday parties, dinners at diverse restaurants, and weekend excursions with other culture clubs. In addition, we organize Trevapalooza, the winter dance. All New Trier students are welcome! We watch Japanese shows, movies, and anime, dance, sing karaoke, play games, cook Japanese food, and learn about traditional aspects of Japanese culture such as calligraphy and sumie painting. We also participate in Taste of New Trier and collaborative activities with other culture clubs. Korean Culture Learn more about Korean culture through activities, food, and just hanging out with others interested in Korean culture. We also participate in the annual Taste of New Trier event by selling Korean food and educating others about all things Korean! All are welcome. Korean Drum This club is dedicated to the Korean traditional art of drumming. Students get hands-on experience playing instruments and learning various techniques and repertoire. The club’s mission is to promote Korean culture and perform at various school and community events. No experience necessary and beginners are welcome! K-Pop Dance Students learn about K-Pop (Korean Popular Music) culture and practice dance routines and choreography for events such as Dance Day, Roots of New Trier, International Seminar Day, and other school and community events. Whether you’re a casual fan, a dancer interested in K-Pop, or a die-hard lover of Korean culture, all are welcome. No previous experience is required Latin Latin Club promotes interest in the civilization of ancient Rome and camaraderie among New Trier Latin students. We sponsor academic competitions, cultural events, and social outings for our members. This meeting will be the highlight of your week! There is something for everyone in Latin Club. Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) Cultural Society MENA promotes a wider understanding of Middle Eastern and North African culture among the New Trier student body, provides an opportunity for MENA and non-MENA students to assemble, and encourages students to learn more about the region’s various cultures through games, social activities, and more. Members watch Russian movies, play cards and board games, listen to Russian music, and take trips to local restaurants. All are welcome and you don’t have to be or speak Russian! South Asian Join South Asian Club to experience and embrace the cultures of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and more! We participate in fun activities, eat food, watch movies, socialize, and also perform on Dance Day each year. This club is open to everyone! Spanish Spanish Club is open to students of all four grades who are interested in Spanish-speaking cultures, learning a little Spanish, doing culturally related activities and community service projects. You do not need to be studying the Spanish language to be a member of the Club. Spanish Club provides an opportunity to students of different grades and backgrounds to meet, socialize and develop friendships. Spanish Club is a club in which attendance is not mandatory, where people speak Spanish if they choose, and learn about the Spanish language and the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. W.A.Y.A. “What Are You Anyway?” This club focuses on the mixed-race and interracial-family experience, but W.A.Y.A. is open to ALL students, regardless of race. It is the perfect place to make new friends from diverse backgrounds. We watch films, eat snacks, create art, and hold discussions. Spanish Club W. A. Y.
