Art is, more often than not, a reflection of the artist and the external/ internallife, history, and culture around them. The courses will also highlight how to look at paintings, and discuss composition, themes and techniques used. Art History Section I Tom James The January (and spring session) classes will cover “Outsider” artists. We will discuss Chicagoans Lee Godie, Wesley Willis, Joseph Yoakum, and Henry Darger, Georgia’s Howard Finster, The Watts Towers of L.A. and Salvation Mountain. We also will watch documentaries of Outsider Art in other parts of the world. The second half of the session will cover the Chicago Imagists. We will be watching a DVD presenting a very important overview of this groundbreaking art movement and the principal artists Roger Brown, Ed Paschke, Wilmette’s very own Gladys Nillson and Jim Nutt,and others. We will discuss Burchfield’s revolutionary “sounds of nature” paintings and his desolate urban landscapes. Italian immigrant Joseph Stella’s wonderful and powerfully beautiful Brooklyn Bridge series, along with his beguiling spiritual paintings, will also be studied.
