To say it has been a unique year would be an understatement. The world as we knew it has changed. I am so proud of the New Trier Extension students and instructors who changed with it. When given the choice to “do nothing” or “reach for greatness,” we did the latter. We maintained 65% of our program offerings virtually, we offered new programs, we kept people connected, we counted on seeing each other in our NTX classes to help the days be meaningful, and we learned how to use Zoom! We will continue to operate remotely for the winter-spring session and encourage you to connect with others through our “live online” classes via Zoom. You just need internet access and a device that supports the Zoom platform to join us. If you are new to online learning, the NTX staff joins in every class to help students troubleshoot and make sure you can connect to your class. You will not be alone in learning how to join your class on Zoom. While the winter months may be a challenge, what better way to start the new year than by taking a class through New Trier Extension? Have things piled up and you’re not quite sure what to do with everything? As spring is upon us, it’s a great time to get organized. It feels so good to have clear spaces to live and work in, where you can actually see what you have and easily find what you need. This class will help you create an organized home where you will feel more calm, in control and productive. You will learn key principles and a process for organizing your space, how to let go of items you no longer need, and a variety of tips, tools and strategies for getting and staying organized. Introduction to Herbs offers basic information about growing both annual and perennial herbs indoors. Ms. Wildman will distinguish among the various types of adoption now available – agency, private, related, foreign and foster parent – and the many steps families are required to follow, including home study, foster parent licensing, and immigration. She will share resources on choosing adoption agencies, attorneys, organizations, and related professionals. Ms. Wildman establishes a framework to help families understand current practices. Her discussion will conclude with considering the common needs of adopted children. Tom James • 7 sessions This is an introductory drawing class. This term, we will learn the basics of drawing. The class will be a mix of tutorials, demos and class participation. We will use a variety of materials such as markers, colored pencil, and gouache. Images will be presented from online sources. The instructor will give demos and tutorials and then assign projects to work on between classes. Each class will begin with an instructor demo and discussion about how to structure and approach your subjects using different styles and techniques. The class will work in acrylics on 9”X12” watercolor paper, canvas pads, canvas paper or small canvases. A project will be assigned each week and discussed the following week. This session will be focused on doing work in the styles of famous artists such as Karl Benjamin, Kandinsky, and Milton Avery. During the class an image will be provided as an assignment to be discussed the following week. We will also discuss techniques, composition and other aspects. YouTube videos, internet images and books are used for visual aid. Artists we will cover over the course of the February-March session include Hilma Af Klint, Georgina Houghton, and The Theosophists. We will also look into the Scandinavian Landscape painters of the 18th century along with The Russian painters of the late 19th century, like Ivan Shishkin. Each week the instructor will assign exercises to be discussed the following week. This course will be tailored to your individual skill level from the very beginner to those who have a higher level of watercolor experience, with plenty of personalized instruction. Instruction is done step-by-step, but students may also paint independently as they wish. Students will learn color mixing, painting techniques, working from photos, composition and other skills to move their painting to the next level.
